Chinchillas live in South America, from Argentina to Venezuela, in the mountain ranges. Chinchillas prefer highlands, where they climb to a height of 3 km. Chinchillas settle mainly on the rocks, where there are ready shelters for them - rock cracks. In an area where there are none, chinchillas dig holes. Chinchillas are perfectly adapted to the way of life in the mountains. With the help of well-developed sense organs, they are perfectly oriented in the mountains at night - at the time of the greatest activity, since chinchillas are nocturnal animals. An interesting feature of the skeleton of these rodents: it is able to shrink vertically, and therefore chinchillas easily crawl into the narrow spaces between the stones. However, not much is known about the peculiarities of chinchilla life in freedom. Zoologists know about these rodents by their behavior in artificially created conditions.
The body is approximately 20–40 cm long, the ears reach 6 cm, and the whiskers grow up to 10 cm. On average, males weigh 369–493 g, and females weigh 379–450 g. In animals, sexual dimorphism is observed, females weigh up to 800 g, males - up to 600 g. Color is usually gray, with a lighter belly. The reaction rate of chinchillas compensates for poor and monocular vision. However, chinchillas are endowed with the ability to see in the dark. The hind legs of chinchillas have four fingers and grow twice as long as their front paws, on which five grasping fingers are located. The chinchilla has 20 teeth, 16 of them are indigenous, and they continue to grow throughout life.
In nature, chinchillas live in colonies. Chinchillas take baths of sand or volcanic ash. And so that the sand does not get into the ears of rodents, their auricles are equipped with special membranes that seal the ear during such bathing. The hair of chinchillas is very soft and thick, reaching a length of 4 cm, with 60–70 fluffs growing from each hair bulb.
Chinchillas at home, in compliance with all norms on average live 30 years and more, but there are cases when some individuals live to 37 years.
